In 2020 the New River Gorge became New River Gorge National Park. The area includes New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Bluestone National Scenic River and Gauley River National Recreation Area.
Spanning New River near Fayetteville is the New River Gorge Bridge. At 876 feet, it is the third-highest bridge in the US.Prior to completion of the bridge in 1977 the only way to cross the river was by a narrow bridge at the bottom of the gorge. The route took over 45 minutes down a narrow winding road and back up the other side. We took the Fayette Station Road Driving Tour and crossed a replica of the original bridge.
